Chillin’ out in the Vale of Avalon!

Ah bliss! England seems to be frying under the sun of a mini heat wave and it feels oh, so wonderful! I don’t think we’ve had sun like this for almost two years! We had a tow bar fitted to the car on Friday and decided to take a few days away in the caravan. We headed down to Glastonbury on Friday afternoon, past Stonehenge and found ourselves this lovely little caravan site very near to Glastonbury Tor. We’d sorted out the caravan electrics midweek, so when we got to the site, we put the feet down, sorted  things out and then plugged in the kettle for a cup of tea! Bliss! We watched the sun set over the Tor which we could see from our caravan. Glastonbury Tor is home to Gwyn ap Nudd, King of the Fairies and has many mythical legends, including King Arthur, attached to it! You can read all about it here.

Saturday morning we climbed the Tor with the Uberhound, up a very, very steep hill! We got there early enough to be there almost on our own.

The view was definitely worth it though!

After we walked briskly down (you can’t help but walk briskly, it’s so steep!), we stopped at the Chalice Well Gardens for a stroll in the beautiful spring gardens. The waters from the well are reputed to have healing powers and you can drink from the special waters at the Lions Head

You can walk through the pools of spring water which are ice cold and make your tootsies shiver!

There are many gardens of meditation where you can rest and think

and many beautiful flowers.

Then we walked round Glastonbury town, looking in all the wonderful hippy shops

On Sunday we went to Glastonbury Abbey, the ancient spiritual site. It’s mostly ruins now but the gardens are absolutely stunning.

It’s difficult to imagine the scale of the place. It must have been huge! It was supposed to have been the largest and richest Abbey in the country in medieval times.

King Arthur was buried here…

When Joseph of Arimathea arrived here with the Holy Grail, he plunged his staff into the ground and it sprang forth into this tree, the Glastonbury Thorn.

The Abbots Kitchen is still complete

Before long it was time to return home!

*Sigh* I can’t wait to get away again!
